Disability Access Surveys
The purpose of completing Disability Access Surveys is to determine how accessible buildings are to disabled people.
The survey addresses the requirements of the Equality Act 2010 and is completed by comparing the facilities provided at the property with the standards identified in BS 8300 and Part M of the Building Regulations.
Where an item does not meet the standard, a practical recommendation is given in an Action Report. These recommendations take account of the current facilities; the use of these facilities by disabled people; the requirement to make reasonable physical building alterations; and the need, where necessary, to introduce on going monitoring and control measures.
Where the standard cannot be met, i.e. physical alterations would not be reasonable, then advice is given on meeting the standard by alternative means.
Using a series of checklists the auditor will follow a sequence specifically looking at:
-
Approaches to the property.
-
Access points into the property.
-
Movement around the premises both horizontally and vertically.
-
Disabled amenities such as WCs.
-
Means of escape including special evacuation strategies.
-
Building management.
The Audit Report produced will highlight non-compliance and make recommendations with regard to the Equality Act, Approved Documentation of the Building Regulations and 'Best Practice'.
