"Unacceptable" that taxpayers have to foot medical bills
The use of the taxpayers money to fund medical bills is unacceptable amid shortfalls in
health and safety management by employers, an expert has said.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Health made the comments after the National Health Service (NHS) recently revealed plans for the body to claim back more money from injuries at work caused by employers failing in the duties to serve as
health and safety consultants for their workforce, reports the Daily Telegraph.
She said taxpayers should not food the medical treatment bill for people injured at work because of the failure of employers to provide adequate protection for their staff, the article noted.
"Hospitals are now able to recover the costs and decide where they want to reinvest that money," the government spokesperson told the newspaper after the announcement of the new injury costs recovery scheme for the NHS.
The UK health service will now reportedly be able to claim back up to £672 when a patient is admitted to hospital following an accident at work, compared to a previous maximum cashback figure of £320.
Some 2.2 million Britons were suffering from an illness they believed to have been caused or made worse by their current or past work, according to a recent study by the Health and Safety Executive.
