UN says disaster risks must be mitigated
United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon has appealed to all nations to bolster efforts to curb disaster risk.
He says decisive action taken now can be "one of the best investments countries can make", as such moves are critical to saving lives and livelihoods.
Speaking at the launch ceremony in Bahrain of the first-ever Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction, Mr Ban claimed reducing such risk can help countries decrease poverty, safeguard development and adapt to climate change.
He claimed that good progress had been made in terms of establishing preparedness programmes worldwide, but more needs to be done to avoid damage occurring through unexpected incidents.
According to a new report by the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, global disaster risk is on the rise because of unsafe cities, environmental destruction and climate change.
It claimed that countries around the world are becoming "increasingly susceptible" to disasters because of the lack of government attention, unplanned urbanisation and deplorable economic conditions.
