TUC calls for workplace health improvements

The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has launched a campaign aimed at encouraging employers in the UK to improve their occupational health assistance provision.

According to the organisation, two million workers in the UK believe that they have become ill as a direct result of their jobs each year.

Consequently, the TUC has launched a new educational workbook entitled Occupational Health: Dealing with the Issues which it hopes will enable workplace health and safety representatives to work with their employers to make the working environment healthier.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the union, said: "Many people are ill and in pain as a result of lifting injuries, slips and trips, stress and noise-induced hearing loss suffered either at, or caused by, their work."

This workbook ought to enable union reps to "learn about all the aspects of occupational health", he added.

Research by the Health and Safety Executive has revealed that in 2006-07, 2.2 million people claimed to have an illness they believe was brought on or made worse by their jobs.

The body noted that 30 million days were lost due to work-related ill health during this period.
