Total gets huge fine for health and safety failures
Oil company Total has received a massive fine due to its part in the
health and safety failings which led to an explosion at a depot in Hertfordshire.
Following an investigation by the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Environment Agency, Total was fined £3.6 million after the blast at the Buncefield oil depot registered 2.4 on the Richter scale and injured 43 people.
The firm was also ordered to pay costs of more than £2.5 million, while Hertfordshire Oil Storage was fined more than £1 million and British Pipeline Agency was told to pay £300,000 with costs of almost £500,000.
TAV Engineering and Motherwell Control Systems 2003 were each fined £1,000 for their part in the health and safety failings, as well as being ordered to contribute £500 each in costs.
Howard Davidson, Thames director at the Environment Agency, said: "The Buncefield blast shattered the local community and left a long-term legacy of pollution."
There were no fatalities when the explosion occurred in December 2005.
