Students forced to stay in hotels after health and safety fears
Health and safety fears at halls of residence in Blackburn have forced a college to cover the cost of around 25 students to stay in hotels.
The scholars were living in College House on Preston New Road, but will be forced to vacate the premises on December 23rd 2009 due to electrical problems at the property, the Lancashire Telegraph reported.
Principal Ian Clinton claimed that the education facility had no option but to take the move, which will set it back up to £60 a night in temporary accommodation fees.
Electrical work was carried out at the site over the summer months, he explained, but the college has since identified more improvements which need to be completed.
Although the timing coincides with exams and coursework, he said: "I would far rather have one or two students upset than risk their
health and safety."
Health and Safety Executive has revealed that it hears of around 1,000 electrical accidents at work each year, which result in about 25 deaths annually.
