Scaffolding collapse leads to fine
A company has been fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £20,000 legal costs after a section of scaffolding collapsed at a train station in Aberystwyth, Wales, causing
health and safety concerns.
The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned construction companies to ensure that scaffolding is properly erected and safe to use and reminded them of their
health and safety responsibilities.
On February 22nd 2005, 52 metres of three-storey scaffolding collapsed at a C Sneade building site next to Aberystwyth train station, falling and obstructing the track.
No one was injured but workers were using the scaffolding minutes beforehand and the public were put at risk.
Wayne Williams, HSE inspector, said: "Scaffolding is an essential tool for construction companies to facilitate safe working at height, but it is vital that all precautions to prevent collapse are taken."
A Surrey property development company was recently fined for
health and safety negligence after scaffolding collapsed onto a street being used by pedestrians.
