RoSPA course 'should improve workplace health and safety'

The launch of the UK's first BTEC-accredited health and safety course should encourage more businesses to adopt the recognised qualification, it has been claimed.

In January, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) launched a new Manual Handlers Trainers Course with BTEC Level 3 accreditation, the first of its kind in the UK.

"Gaining BTEC accreditation for RoSPA's Manual Handling Trainers Course gives delegates a levelled qualification and makes the course more appealing," said Frances Richardson, director of operations at the organisation.

"RoSPA believes that a greater number of organisations will choose to take up the course now it is a recognised, levelled qualification."

She explained that manual handling is a particularly important area of health and safety for businesses, as "poor manual handling frequently results in back problems".

Preventing such injuries will bring benefits to organisations and reduce costs, the expert claimed.

"Their designated manual handling trainer will then be able to pass their skills on to their colleagues and help reduce workplace injuries," Ms Richardson stated.
