Roofing firm fined for health and safety failures
A roofing company from Leicester has been fined almost £5,000 and ordered to pay £1,314 in costs after
health and safety failures were discovered at a site.
Dean Paul Shaw, trading as Streamline Guttering and Cladding, of Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire, was prosecuted by the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for failing to provide safety equipment for his employees.
HSE inspector Mhairi Lockwood said three workers were placed in danger by the
health and safety failures as there was no protection to stop them falling from the roof.
"There was also a sharp palisade fence below which could have caused horrific injuries if anyone had fallen on it," commented the inspector.
Figures from the HSE estimate that 4,000 employees were injured by falling from a height at work during 2009.
This comes after the HSE issued advice to roofing companies after it doubled its
health and safety warnings to building firms on Merseyside.
