Pirelli fined after health and safety failures led to broken leg
Tyre manufacturer Pirelli has been fined almost £10,000 after
health and safety failures led to a worker breaking his leg.
Allan Miller was working at the firm's facility in Carlisle when he was hit from behind by a pallet being carried on a forklift truck.
He has been unable to return to work since suffering a broken leg in the incident.
Michael Griffiths, the investigating Health and Safety Executive inspector, explained that many workplace accidents are the result of health and safety failures relating to the use of vehicles.
"The storage area should have been clearly marked as 'pedestrian-free', and the injured worker should have been told of the risks prior to the incident in October 2009," he said.
Mr Griffiths added that the site operators should have ensured all members of staff were trained in health and safety.
Pirelli is one of the largest companies of its kind and is the official supplier of tyres to this season's Formula One championship.
