Man scarred for life after health and safety failures
A Stockport company has been fined £1,003 and ordered to pay costs of £2,997 after being prosecuted by the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Rust Proofing Company pleaded guilty to breaching
health and safety regulations after a worker received burns to his legs.
He was lighting a fire using a can of paint thinner when it exploded, leaving him scarred for life.
HSE inspector Philip Strickland said it was disturbing the company had allowed such a breach of
health and safety to happen regularly.
He said: "This process for removing powder coatings was extremely dangerous and had been used on numerous occasions by workers."
Mr Strickland added the company had the facilities to remove the coating safely but used an unsafe procedure to speed up the process.
The HSE advises companies to be wary of the threat of less obvious flammable materials such as dusts from wood and sugar as well as the dangers of petrol and paint thinners.
