Landlord fined for gas boiler neglect
A Worcester landlord has been fined for failing to maintain a gas boiler in a property he manages.
Shazad Ishaq of Wylds Lane, Worcester, was fined £2,500 and ordered to pay £1,500 costs after pleading guilty to contravening the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.
Tenants at the the house were forced to seek hospital treatment for suspected carbon monoxide poisoning after complaining about the smell of fumes coming from the gas boiler.
According to
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Janice Willets, no maintenance or cleaning work appeared to have been carried out on the boiler for "a considerable period" prior to the incident.
She added: "Further investigations also showed a landlord's gas safety certificate had not been made available to the tenant for several months.
"There is a duty on landlords to maintain gas appliances in safe condition for use by their tenants and ensure their certificates are up to date."
Earlier this month, HSE inspector Andrew Bowker reminded landlords and property agents to ensure their gas appliances are serviced and maintained.
