Lack of asbestos services firm leads to £4k fine
A company has been fined £4,000 because it failed to use an
asbestos services firm to get rid of the dangerous material.
Eastern Regional Shopfitters was also ordered to pay more than £3,000 towards the cost of the court case after it was prosecuted following an investigation by the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Two workers were exposed to the deadly fibres when ripping out old shop fittings, while three members of management at the Arndale Centre in Manchester may have also been affected.
Tom Merry, the investigating inspector at HSE, stated that Eastern Regional Shopfitters had chosen not to bring in asbestos services contractors despite being aware of the presence of the material.
Mark Green, who was one of the shop fitters working at the site, said: "It plays on my mind. I am more aware of the possibility I may become ill and that my life has unwittingly been put on the line."
Asbestos can be found in various places in a building, such as in the floor tiles.
