Inexperienced employees most at risk in workplace

Business employers need to take steps to protect vulnerable people from injury in the workplace, it has been suggested.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), new or inexperienced employees are the most at risk of being injured in the workplace.

Judith Hackitt, chair of the HSE, said the speed of expansion of the offshore wind sector could result in an increase in untested employees due to a "potential skills gap".

"The rapid expansion will of course mean increased activity levels and that will bring a sharp increase in the potential for health and safety related incidents and accidents," she said.

Ms Hackitt added that existing companies may struggle with unfamiliar health and safety hazards, while tight timescales could also add pressure to many firms in the sector.

"People having to deliver projects on time, working in unfamiliar environments, multiple contractors and contractor interfaces all add to the pressures on all concerned," she noted.

This means employers must take it upon themselves to prioritise health and safety in the workplace at all times, she suggested.

On January 31st, Scottish first minister Alex Salmond welcomed the news that Korean company Samsung Heavy Industries is to base its first European offshore wind project in Fife in an inward venture worth up to £100 million.

This is expected to create more than 500 new jobs north of the border, meaning steps must be taken to reduce the risk of injuries.
