Improper asbestos survey leads to fine

A Hertfordshire refurbishment company has been fined £3,000 and ordered to pay legal fees of £2,091.70 after two workers were exposed to asbestos due to an inaccurate survey of the construction site.

Bestoff Services pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations at Didcot magistrates court after the incident, which occurred in Oxford between February 1st and 5th 2008.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has reminded companies of the need for proper risk assessment when it comes to asbestos surveying.

Karen Morris, inspector for the HSE, said: "This incident shows the importance of carrying out asbestos surveys before refurbishment work starts. It is vital that asbestos surveys are accurate and can be relied upon, in order to prevent this kind of inadvertent exposure."

A recent HSE inspection of 48 refurbishment sites in the north-east resulted in eight notices being served in relation to risk of asbestos.
