HSE: People use health and safety as an excuse
Health and safety is used as something to hide behind by too many people.
This is the view of the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which welcomed the appointment of Lord Young of Graffham to lead a review into regulations which affect businesses around the UK.
In a letter to Lord Young, chair of the HSE Judith Hackett stated that the body would support him while he is conducting his review, which will also examine compensation culture.
"We in HSE have been saying for some time that
health and safety is being used by too many as a convenient excuse to hide behind," she said.
Since 2007, the HSE has run a myth of the month campaign in which it aims to dispel incorrectly held views about
health and safety and its application.
The chosen myth for June 2010 is that children are banned from playing pin the tail on the donkey because of
health and safety risks.
