HSE 'will not tolerate poor health and safety'
The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned building firms that it will not tolerate poor
health and safety on construction sites.
It recently carried out spot checks at construction sites across Nottinghamshire, with one in three firms receiving enforcement notices as a result.
More than 65 sites were inspected by the HSE over the two days, with 21 enforcement notices handed out to companies.
Most of these were for
health and safety failures regarding employees working at height.
However, the HSE stated that most of the construction sites visited had good
health and safety.
Nic Rigby, HSE's principal inspector of construction for Nottinghamshire, said: "Companies have a legal responsibility to protect the lives of workers and site safety should be paramount."
According to the latest figures from the HSE, poor
health and safety led to 227 serious injuries on construction sites in the county last year.
The body also estimates more than 1,000 employees across the UK suffer serious injuries while at work every month.
