HSE prosecutes firm after worker struck by robot
The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has prosecuted a company after a worker was injured in an accident with a manufacturing robot.
At the resulting court case, Castle Bromwich-based Dura Automotive Body and Glass Systems UK was fined £30,000 and ordered to pay £20,000 in costs.
Michael Brewer was repairing the industrial robot when the accident occurred, the machine striking him in the throat and causing nerve damage, as well as problems with his voicebox.
His injuries - which could have left him paralysed down one side of his body - have prevented him from returning to work.
HSE inspector Edward Fryer stated that the case is a prime example of a company not taking health and safety seriously enough.
"Keeping the robot on the automatic cycle in these circumstances could very well have resulted in automatic death," he said.
Last year, ThysennKrupp Tallent was fined £14,000 after an employee, who was machining a small bracket for an automotive robot jig, suffered fractures to his hand.
