HSE launches property developers' safety scheme
The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a campaign to raise awareness of
health and safety issues in the construction and property development industry.
Citing the 38 deaths and many more injuries and illnesses which occurred during building and development projects last year, the HSE aims to make anyone involved in the industry - property investor, developer or renovator aware that they have a role to play in ensuring good
health and safety.
A lack of awareness of the legal responsibilities of property developers under the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 has also contributed to the launch of the campaign.
Chris Tisi, who chairs the campaign stakeholder group, said: "I've been involved in development of property in various capacities over 35 years and found that
health and safety has to be an integral part of any project in bringing it to completion on time and to budget."
In the past, property developers have faced hefty sums for negligence of
health and safety, with one Suffolk developer fined £32,000 and ordered to pay £6,233 in legal costs after contravening eight
health and safety regulations.
