HSE issues asbestos services advice
The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued advice to company bosses who are looking to employ an
asbestos services firm.
According to the HSE, only
asbestos services companies that are UKAS accredited or ABICS certified should be used to carry out surveys on buildings.
To help companies understand what is required of an
asbestos services firm, the HSE has published Asbestos: The Survey Guide.
Dr Martin Gibson, author of the guide and a principal specialist inspector for HSE, stated that bosses looking to employ
asbestos services firms must ensure they are competent as a top priority.
He said: "Those organisations or individuals without accreditation and/or certification will find it more difficult to demonstrate that they are competent."
Rob Bettinson of UKAS explained that
asbestos services firms that are UKAS accredited demonstrate that they work within a well defined management system.
Figures from the HSE state that asbestos is responsible for around 4,000 deaths in the UK each year.
