Hotels 'failing on fire risk assessments'
A newspaper investigation has discovered that hundreds of hotels in south-west England have failed to comply with fire safety regulations.
The Western Morning News reports that in the two years since Newquay's Penhallow hotel burnt to the ground - killing three people - many proprietors have failed to heed safety warnings.
It says 473 notices have been issued to accommodation facilities across Devon and Cornwall informing them that they have contravened legislation geared at avoiding further injuries and loss of life.
Outdated alarms, a lack of extinguishers and inadequate escape routes were among the typical faults discovered.
Cornwall Fire Service area manager Kevin Thomas said many businesses are still less likely than others to fulfill their fire safety responsibilities.
He added: "Some people still expect us to come round and tell them what they have to do. The reality is we now don't do that."
In Hull, households are to benefit from visits from a new door-to-door fire safety team.
According to the Hull Daily Mail, two teams of six civilians will offer advice on
health and safety, hazard awareness and emergency escape routes to local residents over the next two years.
