Healthy and safety planning can reduce risks, says HSE
Companies should establish suitable
health and safety procedures at the beginning of any process in order to save time and money, it has been claimed.
Judith Hackitt, chair of the Health and Safety Executive, said safety in design is far better and more cost effective than attempting to bolt on safety measures at a later stage.
It is certainly better than attempting to implement them after lessons have been learnt because someone has already been harmed, she commented.
Speaking at the RenewableUK Health and Safety 2012 conference in Manchester, Ms Hackitt also said that it is "vital" for companies to learn from each other's experience.
She noted that the reputation of any industry is "only as good as its worst performer".
"It is important to ensure that potential hazards and risks are identified, because if we don't even recognise that they are there then we can't consider them," the HSE chief stated.
"We need to consider them as early as possible in the development process."
She claimed that designing and building suitable and workable health and safety solutions is always going to be cheaper in the long-term.
