Health and safety scaffold failure leads to fine

A Teesside scaffolding company has been prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and fined £4,000 at the resulting court case.

William Bedford, trading as B and J Scaffolding, was charged with breaking health and safety regulations after a scaffold collapsed and fell into a public street in Middlesbrough.

An investigation by the HSE found that the scaffold was not properly secured and Mr Bedford was prosecuted as a result.

HSE inspector Natalie Wright stated workers had used the scaffold for at least five days before it failed.

"It could have collapsed at any time, creating a significant risk to workers and members of the public," she said.

This comes in the same week that Bridlington-based Advanced Scaffolding was fined £3,500 after health and safety failures led to a worker suffering serious injuries.

Stephen Martin fell several metres after the scaffold he was working on overturned, leaving him with broken ribs, as well as fractures to bones in his back.
