Health and safety inspectors target north-east industrial sites
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors will team up with Sunderland City Council to improve standards at industrial sites in the north-east.
The joint campaign will be aimed at raising awareness of workplace
health and safety and promoting sensible management, while measures will be taken if any of the facilities fail to meet legal standards.
It will focus on a number of key topics, including the risk of asbestos and how to control it and the dangers of working from height.
HSE's Jonathan Wills said that inspectors will identify where ladders are being used and ensure that they are safe.
If "dodgy" ladders are identified, he said, then appropriate measures will be taken, which could involve banning their use at certain industrial properties.
"We're also keen to see how local employers are promoting
health and safety through active leadership from managers and by involving staff," he said.
HSE figures show that 1.2 million people in the UK suffered from illness that they believe was caused, or exacerbated by, their workplace.
