Health and safety improvements needed in east England, says HSE

Health and Safety Executive (HSE) officials have urged employers in the east of England to ensure the safety of their workers ahead of the New Year.

According to the organisation, almost 232 workplace incidents occurred in the region over the period each week, equating to an annual total of 2,049 suffering injuries - some of which proved to be fatal.

Consequently, it hopes that publishing the statistics will lead to a crackdown from businesses on potential dangers in the workplace in 2010.

And it warned that if employers fail to take appropriate action it will not hesitate to issue enforcement and prohibition notices.

HSE east of England regional director Heather Bryant said: "The New Year is an opportune time to reflect on the number of incidents in the past 12 months and try and stop the same patterns being repeated."

The organisation previously revealed that 12 people were fatally injured at work between 2008 and 2009, compared with 19 such incidents in the previous year.
