Health and safety failures led to worker's fall
Two firms have been fined after
health and safety failures led to a worker's fall.
Danny Langdon fell seven metres from a factory roof on Christmas Eve 2008 and has been unable to work after fracturing vertebrae in his back.
His employer Hartog Hutton Ltd was fined £10,000 following a prosecution by the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Fluorocarbon Company Ltd, which contracted Hartog Hutton Ltd to carry out the work, admitted one charge of breaching
health and safety regulations and was fined £5,000.
HSE inspector John Berezansky said the accident should not have happened, adding that Mr Langdon was lucky to be alive.
He said: "Working at height is one of the most obvious and well-known dangers for those involved in repairing or maintenance of buildings."
This is the latest serious back injury to occur to a worker as a result of
health and safety failures.
Illson (Builders & Contractors) Ltd was fined after Graham Parkin fell more than three metres and was left with long-term disability problems.
