Health and safety failures led to builder fine
A building company has been fined £15,000 after it pleaded guilty to breaking
health and safety regulations.
Rushi Construction - which is owned by Vikas Patel - was carrying out work on an extension at a property in Buckinghamshire, but exposed the residents to carbon monoxide poisoning through unsafe working practices.
An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found that no Gas Safe-registered fitter had been involved when work was carried out on the fire in the house.
HSE inspector Stephen Manley stated that firms of all sizes must consider health and safety matters when they are working on building projects.
"Mr Patel's clients could have died because of the unsafe situation he created in their home. HSE will always take action when we see examples of such blatant disregard or ignorance," he said.
Earlier this year, the HSE issued a warning to students living in rented accommodation to be aware of carbon monoxide, as between 15 and 20 people die each year of poisoning from the gas.
