Health and safety failures lead to large fines
Large fines have been handed out to an architect's practice and a construction company after
health and safety failures led to the death of a worker.
David Cairns died after falling nine metres from an unsafe platform, an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found.
The development planner Oxford Architects Partnership was fined £120,000 and ordered to pay costs of £60,000, while Express Park Construction Company (EPCC) was told to pay a fine of £75,000 along with costs of almost £70,000.
Mr Cairns was working for EPCC sub-contractor H&F Air Conditioning at Express Park in Bridgwater, Somerset, when the accident occurred.
HSE inspector Sue Adsett, said: "While it is rare for designers to be charged with breaching health and safety legislation, they must be aware they can be held responsible."
Citytex UK was fined £10,000 earlier this year after it was found that health and safety failures led to the collapse of a building, because the architect had not been informed of work being carried out.
