Health and safety failure led to worker's death
A worker died after
health and safety failures led to his head being crushed between concrete blocks and a metal platform.
Following an investigation into the death of Peter Clarke by the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Hanson Building Products was prosecuted and pleaded guilty to breaking
health and safety regulations.
As a result, the firm was fined £280,000 and ordered to pay costs of just under £30,000.
The HSE investigation discovered that bosses had only conducted a risk assessment into the dangers of employees getting their fingers trapped.
Peter Snelgrove, an HSE inspector, described the incident as "tragic", adding: "The area where he was working was well known as a danger zone by other workers, but he had been on site for less than two weeks and nobody had told him."
Alpha Group Security was recently fined £7,000 after
health and safety failures led to the death of Thomas Fraser, who was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in a property used by the company to house its staff.
