Health and safety failure led to worker losing fingers
An engineering firm has been fined £8,000 and ordered to pay £2,000 in costs after
health and safety failures led to an employee losing four fingers.
Rhys Davies was working on a machine at Encon Engineering of Caerphilly when the accident occurred.
Surgeons were able to reattach three of the lost fingers following the incident, but Mr Davies continues to need treatment on his hand and his injuries remain severe.
Encon Engineering was prosecuted by the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after the organisation visited the premises and found that the machine was not properly guarded.
HSE inspector Steve Curry described the injuries suffered by Mr Davies as "horrific and unnecessary", adding: "The use of powerful engineering machinery was a day-to-day activity of this company, so it is inexcusable that an injury like this has been allowed to happen."
Suffolk farmer Peter Haste was recently fined £1,600 after worker Keith Dennis cut into his arm with a chainsaw having been given no health and safety advice or protective clothing.
