Health and safety failure led to man's death

A quarry firm has been fined almost £100,000 after health and safety failures led to the death of a member of staff.

Arthur Jamieson was working beneath a digger at Parkmore Quarry, Dufftown, when the vehicle rolled backwards and landed on him.

Following an investigation from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Leiths Scotland Limited was fined £96,000 after it pleaded guilty to breaking health and safety regulations.

After the sentencing, HSE inspector Norman Buchanan described the incident as "tragic", adding that following simple health and safety procedures would have prevented the death of Mr Jamieson.

"He had not previously carried out this particular task for this firm. He should have received adequate information, training and supervision from his employers, which Leiths did not provide," he said.

The firm is the latest quarry operator to be prosecuted for health and safety failings, after Humberside Aggregates and Excavations was fined £30,000 following an incident in which a digger rolled 18-feet down a slope.
