Health and safety failure led to farmer's death
A man has been fined £450 and ordered to pay costs of £1,000 after he ran over his employer and killed him.
Farm worker John Peter Metcalfe hit Edward Arthur Fox in April 2007 while reversing a tractor at speed with reduced visibility.
An investigation by the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found a skid mark nearly five metres long where Mr Metcalfe had tried to stop the tractor after colliding with Mr Fox.
HSE inspector Dr Samantha Farrar said had Mr Metcalfe followed
health and safety guidelines, the accident could have been avoided.
"I cannot stress enough the importance of watching out for other people and keeping speed down when driving tractors, especially when visibility is restricted," she commented.
The HSE recently launched its Make a Promise campaign, which aims to educate farm employees of the
health and safety dangers of their workplace.
Statistics from the HSE show more than 450 people have died in farming accidents in the last ten years.
