Health and Safety Executive warns of bogus gas fitters
The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned homeowners of the dangers of using illegal gas fitters.
Using a bogus gas fitter can pose
health and safety dangers as the work may not be carried out safely, leaving potentially dangerous leaks.
The warning comes after James O'Neill of Burnage was found guilty of breaking
health and safety regulations.
Mr O'Neill had illegally fitted a boiler at a house that was later found to be unsafe.
He was fined £2,000 and ordered to pay costs of £1,000.
HSE inspector Gareth Lewis urged homeowners to be on their guard.
He said: "Always check the fitter is on the Gas Safe Register. In this instance Mr O'Neill installed a gas central heating boiler at the property when he was not gas safe registered."
In November 2009, illegal gas fitter Monty Alexander was found guilty of fraudulently posing as a Corgi registered professional and providing unqualified gas fitting services.
