Health and Safety Executive warns energy industry
The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a warning to an international audience of oil and gas experts.
Chemical engineer Judith Hackitt, speaking at an Energy Institute seminar during International Petroleum Week, said energy companies needed to learn lessons in
health and safety from incidents at Flixborough, Bhopal, Buncefield and Texas City.
She said: "Never allow short-term business pressures to blind you to the real and potentially devastating human and business consequences of neglecting process safety and asset integrity."
Ms Hackitt, who is chair of the
Health and Safety Commission, added that asset integrity included more than just making a profit.
In December 2005, a large fire started at Buncefield Oil Storage Depot after a number of explosions at the site.
More than 40 people were injured but there were no fatalities.
Following the incident, the HSE and the Environment Agency commenced criminal proceedings against five companies - Total UK, Hertfordshire Oil Storage, British Pipeline Agency, TAV Engineering and Motherwell Control Systems - for breaking
health and safety guidelines.
