Health and Safety Executive releases worker death figures
The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has revealed that the number of people dying in the workplace has dropped.
Between April 1st 2009 and March 31st 2010, 151 workers died in the course of their duties - a record low number.
This compares to figures of 178 in the previous year and an average of 220 over the last five years.
HSE chair Judith Hackitt said it is "encouraging" to see the number of deaths due to health and safety failures in the workplace falling.
"Being one of the best health and safety performers in the world means continuing to strive to drive these numbers down further - not getting complacent about what we've collectively achieved," she added.
Ms Hackitt stated that thoughts should go to the 151 families who lost a loved one when they did not come home from work.
Deaths in the agriculture sector increased to 38 over the year, marking a return to average levels for the industry after a record low of 25 in 2008-09.
