Health and Safety Executive prosecutes construction companies

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has prosecuted two construction companies following an investigation.

Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering and Multibuild were fined £25,000 and £20,000 respectively, with each company also ordered to pay around £18,000 in court costs.

The prosecution came after the HSE found that health and safety failures were to blame for a 44-tonne machine falling onto a main road in Hull.

A wall was crushed when the pilling machine rolled across the wall and hit it.

HSE inspector Dave Redman said it was a miracle that nobody was killed during the accident, which the two firms pleaded guilty to breaking health and safety regulations for.

"It is every company's responsibility to ensure that employees and members of the public are not exposed to danger from heavy construction machinery," he said.

This comes shortly after Gee Construction was fined £10,000 for health and safety failures at a site in South Wales.
