Health and Safety Executive doubles warnings to roofers
The
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued advice to roofers after the number of warnings it had given out to Merseyside roofing companies doubled.
During the first ten months of 2009, the HSE handed out 69 enforcement notices relating to the
health and safety of roofers in Merseyside, compared to just 30 from the same period in 2008.
Neil Jamieson, an inspector for the HSE in the north-west, said action would be taken against companies which do not consider the
health and safety of their workers.
"We're worried that some roofing companies in Merseyside are trying to cut down on costs and undercut each other by not using scaffolding and other safety equipment," he commented.
The warning comes as part of the HSE's Shattered Lives campaign, which aims to illustrate the dangers of slips, trips and falls in the workplace.
Figures from the HSE show more than 10,000 employees were injured by falling or slipping at work in 2008/09.
