Health and Safety Executive asbestos campaign wins award
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been recognised for the success of its campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of asbestos.
The organisation's "hidden killer" promotion won first prize in the health category of the European Excellence Awards, which were held in Vienna to honour outstanding achievements in the field of public relations.
Spearheaded by ex-Arsenal and England footballer Ian Wright, the strategy generated a 100 per cent increase in calls to HSE's Infoline and a six-fold increase in page requests on the campaign's microsite following its launch in August 2008.
HSE's asbestos programme director Steve Coldrick said the promotion aimed to raise awareness among tradesmen that asbestos was not merely a
health and safety risk from a bygone age.
"We're pleased that our approach has been recognised and commended by experts in the communications industry," he added.
According to HSE figures, around 4,000 deaths are caused each year as a consequence of diseases which developed after inhaling asbestos fibres.
