Health and safety breach led to arson attack
A recycling firm from York has been fined £40,000 and ordered to pay £6,110 in costs after it did not follow
health and safety guidelines relating to the storage of flammable materials.
BCB Environmental Management Limited was prosecuted by the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after an investigation in conjunction with North Yorkshire Police.
As a result of the
health and safety breach, an arsonist was able to access drums of volatile chemicals and start a fire at the business.
HSE inspector Stephen Britton explained that drums of flammable liquid had been left close to unprotected electrical equipment.
"As a hazardous waste specialist BCB should have been well aware of the relevant legislation and should never have handled flammable material in this way," he commented.
This follows a case earlier this year in which the unsafe use of flammable materials led to a worker at Rust Proofing Company having scars for life on his legs after a can of paint thinner exploded.
