Garage prosecuted after student suffers burns

A car garage in Sleaford, Lincolnshire, has been fined £15,000 and ordered to pay legal fees of £9,000 for breaching health and safety regulations after a work experience student suffered serious burns.

Brake fluid ignited into a fireball at Holdingham Garage, owned by Hockmeyer Motors, and the local student suffered burns, and the fireball melted the plastic print of his shirt onto his skin.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a warning to employees about the importance of protecting employees' rights to proper health and safety regulations, especially those who are untrained.

HSE inspector Judith McNulty-Green said: "Work experience pupils are viewed as employees for the purposes of health and safety legislation, yet they are often more vulnerable than a company's trained and qualified employees."

The importance of carrying out suitable fire risk assessments was also emphasised.

An explosion at Buncefield Oil Storage Depot, in which 40 oil workers were injured, recently led to the prosecution of five different companies in January this year, and the trial is still ongoing.
