Foot crushed after health and safety failures
A firm has been fined £10,000 after
health and safety failures led to a worker having his foot crushed.
Alan Seviour was working as a delivery driver for John Wainwright and Co when he became trapped under a paving machine.
His lower leg had to be amputated because of the injuries sustained in the incident.
HSE inspector Annette Walker stated that it is not safe for anyone to work in front of such a machine, despite it being slow-moving.
"Mr Seviour suffered life-changing injuries because the machine was in motion and the driver had limited forward visibility because of the way the machine was designed," she added.
He was able to return to work for the company but has to use a specially adapted van for his deliveries.
This comes shortly after Peterlee firm Conder Solutions was fined £15,000 after a worker lost his hand because of health and safety failings.
Although surgeons were able to reattach the employee's hand, he still cannot use it and has not worked since the accident in June 2009.
