Businesses have been reminded they must apply for appropriate permission before importing waste.

Hopkins Building Contractors and Hopkins Developments were prosecuted for transporting waste soil and stone, which was later found to be contaminated with cyanide and various metals.

"They could have avoided prosecution if they had spoken to the agency or Somerset County Council planners before starting work," he added.
Nuclear power plant Sellafield was recently issued with an enforcement notice by the Environment Agency, following a leak of radioactive liquid at the Cumbria site.
