Firms fined for illegal waste dumping
Several firms and people have been fined after an investigation by the Environment Agency found they had illegally dumped waste at a site in Kent, breaking
health and safety laws.
In all, those involved received a total fine of almost £75,000, with PJ Brown Limited being fined £25,000 of that amount.
Waste found at the site in Polhill included paper, tarmac, metal and plastic and altogether there was enough dumped rubbish to fill three Olympic-size swimming pools with some left over.
Dave Eden, team leader for environmental crime, said the agency is committed to stamping out waste dumping incidents such as these.
He said: "Illegal waste sites put the environment and human health at risk and undermine legitimate businesses.
"Prosecution is always a last resort, but there will always be some people who are persistent offenders."
Earlier this month, officers from the Environment Agency raided a suspected illegal waste site near Peterborough, with one man arrested as a result.
