Firm fined for not using asbestos services company
A building firm from Pontypool has been fined £2,500 and ordered to pay £1,250 in costs after it was found to have carried out dangerous work without employing an
asbestos services company.
Carpenters from Ron Couch Building Contractors removed a piece of asbestos insulation board in order to get to a boiler in a private property.
The law states that work involving the removal of the dangerous material must only be carried out by asbestos services contractors.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Steve Richardson said: "This work exposed the edges of the board, increasing the risk of releasing asbestos fibres which could be inhaled by the workers and anyone else using the premises."
He added that this is one of the most important reasons why asbestos services specialists must always be brought in to remove the material.
Earlier this year, Bristol-based landlord firm Frank Bruce and Company was fined £18,000 for not dealing properly with asbestos.
