Firm fined £36,300 over failure to control pollution
A company has had to pay out £36,300 in fines after pleading guilty to polluting a local tributary of the River Ray.
Hills Waste Solutions was fined £20,000 and ordered to pay £16,300 costs at Swindon magistrates court last week.
It was found that faulty welds to a plastic liner allowed a small amount of effluent, or leachate, leaking into a ditch at the Chapel Farm landfill site at Blunsdon.
Although the company had carried out remedial works within 24 hours, it had not conducted a survey and were not aware of the leak until it was reported to the Environment Agency by a member of the public.
Hills Waste Solutions pleaded guilty to keeping controlled waste in a manner likely to cause pollution of the environment or harm to human health.
Environment Agency officer Jo Moakes said: "The protection of our water resources is one of our top priorities at the Environment Agency.
"Not only is the protection of fish and aquatic life important but equally, we need to ensure that the recreational, agricultural and industrial uses of our river environments are preserved."
Meanwhile, fish farm company Lighthouse Caledonia was fined £12,000 for spilling fuel last month.
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency said that the fuel had leaked through a protective embankment into a burn which contributes to Loch Kishorn in the Highlands.
