Fire safety savings flagged up for Lambeth Council
Lambeth Council was served with a series of fire safety enforcement notices during 2011 following inspections at a number of public-owned properties.
The London Fire Brigade uncovered failings at schools, children's clubs and sheltered housing complexes, raising concerns over safety for members of the public.
Most recently, a notice was served on Lambeth's chief executive Derrick Anderson on November 14th for fire safety risks found in high-rise housing block Lambeth Towers in Kennington.
The document said the council had failed to light emergency exits, give employees fire safety training or effectively manage preventative and protective fire safety measures, reports the South London Press.
A London Fire Brigade spokesman said 16,000 properties are inspected every year, with action taken as deemed appropriate.
"This can range from enforcement notices to prosecution as a last resort," they stated.
"It is essential that those people responsible for the fire safety of buildings understand their responsibilities under fire safety law."
The spokesperson said this means undertaking a suitable
fire risk assessment, and putting in place appropriate measures to minimise the risk of fire.
