Fire risk assessment programme launched in Kent
The
health and safety needs of businesses operating at Kent industrial units are being addressed thanks to a new initiative called Estates Excellence.
Operated by the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Kent Fire and Rescue Service, it will offer free-of-charge training to companies in the south-east on a range of topics.
These will include best practice advice for workplace fire safety issues, as well as seminars to help managers reduce their red tape.
Mark Richards, the service's senior fire protection manager Mark Richards welcomed the new
health and safety programme, adding the partnership between itself and HSE would help to reduce the chance of firms receiving the same training twice.
He added that he hopes the scheme will encourage local businesses to "comply with their statutory responsibilities and ensure that they're aware of the potentially devastating economical effects of a fire".
South-east England's
health and safety record improved last year, with HSE figures showing 15 workers were fatally injured at work in 2008-09, compared to 23 people in 2007-08.
