Falls 'are preventable'

Falls are highly preventable, according to one injury prevention co-ordinator.

Speaking to the Muswellbrook Chronicle, Patsy Bourke urged hospitals, residential aged care facilities and other community centres to take steps to reduce accident incidences.

"We are looking at how to manage the risk for people in each of those settings," she commented.

Ms Bourke said falls are so common that people think it is an inevitable part of aging, but they can be avoided with proactive action.

Removing trip hazards and installing rails in bathrooms and toilets are two ways property landlords can reduce the risks of falls taking place on their premises, she suggested.

Last month, Let Insurance Services managing director Michael Portman urged landlords not to take their eye off health and safety considerations as they bid to reduce costs due to the recession.

He commented: "Landlords should be aware that cheaper insurance deals could cost them more over time.
