Environmental fears over asbestos dumping
Fears over illegal asbestos dumping in Swindon have been raised by one expert, who warns there is a danger of environmental damage.
Leanne Woodford, office manager of registered asbestos removal firm Taylor Roofing, says some people are tempted to dump the potentially hazardous material because of a the cost of removal and fears over its effects.
Ms Woodford told the Swindon Advertiser: "There is the danger that if animals start breaking it up they could be affected.
"If you got to a point where the animals were eating it that could make them very ill."
She points out that removal of asbestos costs around £180 but says many buildings still contain asbestos and unless someone starts to break it up it is unlikely to be a health hazard.
An Environment Agency spokeswoman adds that any contractors taking waste away from a property must be licensed and any hazardous materials must be disposed of at properly managed waste facilities.
Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006, the importation, supply and use of all forms of asbestos is prohibited.
This applies to new use of asbestos if existing asbestos-containing materials are in good condition they must be left in place and monitored.
