Construction firm fined after Health and Safety Executive visit

A construction firm has been ordered to pay a fine of £10,000 and costs of more than £4,500 following an inspection by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Gee Construction pleaded guilty to breaking health and safety regulations after the visit to the site in south Wales.

Numerous health and safety breaches were discovered by the inspector, including that lift shafts were unguarded and there was not enough protection to stop workers falling from height.

HSE inspector David Kirkpatrick stated that there were "clear" health and safety failings on view when the visit took place in October 2009.

"Despite the increased risk no-one was injured on this site, but this case must serve as a warning to companies of the need to ensure working at height is properly managed," he said.

Figures from the HSE show that in 2008/2009, there were more than 10,000 workers who suffered a major injury because of a trip, fall or slip in the workplace.
